When I saw this news item, my eyes nearly popped out of my head! We had one online poker pundit who at the end of 2010 predicted Peter Eastgate would come out of retirement in 2011. At the time I said to myself “never so soon!” But our expert was right, I was wrong and look just how soon he is back. Peter Eastgate has announced he has found himself and we know this because, not of any official announcement but because his name is on the list of players for the 7th annual NBC National Heads Up Championship.
This poker Championship kicks-off on the 3rd March and takes place at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas. It runs till 6th March and brings together 64 of the best poker players in the world, and they will be competing for a share of a $1.8 million prize pool. The National Heads-Up Poker Championship offers some of the most exciting poker in the world because players just never know what match-ups they are going to get. That is the thing about Heads-Up, and with young Victor Blom claiming this is his best event, we wonder, will he be making an appearance too?
Already confirmed as well as Eastgate are Phil Ivey, Annie Duke – who was last years winner, Vanessa Rousso, Daniel Negreanu, Erik Seidel, Doyle Brunson and last years WSOP Main Event Champion Jonathan Duhamel. WOW, this is quite a line up already!
After being so surprised by his retirement in 2010, it was a shocker to see Eastgate’s name on the list and in a press release he said the reason for his retirement were more personal than professional. In a very short time after winning the 2008 WSOP, he had relocated to London and started a new life as a dynamic poker pro. Apparently two years in a constant spotlight, tournament appearances, thousands of interviews and the ensuing whirlwind did not allow him to catch his breath and he felt he needed time out, so to speak; but always knew there was a chance that he would return to play poker as a professional again. Who knew it would be so quickly?
He does not consider this appearance to be a comeback however. He says PokerStars has been very supportive while he has taken this gap, and is sponsoring him in two events – will they be pitting him against team mate Viktor Blom? He loves playing poker and enjoys the competitive element as well as the mental challenge of tournament events. But felt it was important to grow as a person, and apparently the 8 month break has helped him reconnect. What he really wants is the combination of playing poker, growth as a person and a healthy life outside of the game, so perhaps he has it all figured out?
Before the NBS Heads-up he will play the EPT Copenhagen – dear to him because it is on his home turf, and regarding the auction of his WSOP Bracelet, which was a rather contentious subject last year. He says he was not attempting to make a statement or denigrate the WSOP name. It was what it was, an attempt to raise funds for UNICEF, which is exactly what it did. He is proud of the fact that it raised over $100 000!
